Victor Hugo, one of the most important of the French writers, was born in 1802. His writing was done during an intensely political time in France and he eventually went into political exile himself. His work was influenced by the Romantic movement, and his best known works today are perhaps “The Hunchback of Notre Dame [Notre-Dame de Paris] and “Les Misérables.” He was so revered in France that he is now buried in the Panthéon
