Nicolas Chamfort, born in 1741 was known for his witty conversations and  writings which spanned comedy, politics and verse. Born in humble circumstances, during his lifetime he developed admirers that eventually brought him in 1776 to the Court of  Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. However, when the French Revolution broke out, he curiously became an advocate of the revolution and was, for a time, imprisoned.
